​WSTS RULES AND REGULATIONS 2018: Please Read Carefully!

This competition is open to persons in the sixth to twelfth grade  living 

on the Westside (95360, 95313, 95387, 95385, 95322, & 95363)

are permitted to participate.  

Applications for the competition must be received by October 25, 2018 (for scheduling ease, please enter early.) The auditions and the award ceremony will be held on Nov. 17, 2018.  Auditions will be in the early afternoons and the results will be announced at the award ceremony that evening. On October 20th, you will receive an email with your specific time to come for your audition. No one will allowed in the theater unit their audition time. 

 Must be present to receive the award should you be selected. An entry fee (non-refundable) of $20.00 check or money order must be submitted with each category application per participant (Change from

previous years)...

WSTS has the right at any time to require proof of identity and/or eligibility. Failure to provide such proof within a reasonable time could result in disqualification from the competition. All personal details and information requested by WSTS by each participant must be truthful, accurate and in no way misleading.

WSTS reserves the right to disqualify any participant from the competition or auditioning process in its sole discretion, should the participant at any stage supply untruthful, inaccurate or misleading personal details and/or information or should the participant be ineligible for the competition pursuant to these rules.

By submission of an application and entering into this competition, each participant represents and warrants his or her compliance with these rules and regulations. No participant will be permitted to audition unless he or she has acknowledged and agreed to these rules and regulations.

By entering, each participant agrees that WSTS and their successors and assigns have the right to use their names, likenesses, and images of all persons performing for future advertising, promotion and publicity in any manner and in any medium now known or hereafter devised in perpetuity.

By participating in this competition, participants agree to be bound by these rules and the decisions of the judges. WSTS is not responsible for any typographical or other error in the administration of the competition or in the announcement of the prize.

Auditions & Performance
Auditions will take place at the West Side Theatre in Newman on Saturday, Nov. 17th between 9:00am and 3:00pm, depending on the amount of entries received. The top scoring participants will compete in the finals on Saturday, November 17th at approximately 5:30 PM depending again on the amount of participants.

Auditions are not open to the public!
Type of Talent Accepted:
All acts must be safe and appropriate (family friendly). 

Onstage Talent Include: 
Instrumental: Piano (provided), organ, woodwinds, brasses, strings, percussion, & guitars
Vocal: Any genre of music…must be sung from memory.
Dance: Any genre of dance, solo, duet, or group (no more than four)
Art (painting & drawing):  Artwork of all medium and technique (Each artwork must be two dimensional (2D) and suitable to be wall mounted. minimum A4 (11.7 x 8.3 in) to no larger than A3 (16.5 x 11.7 in). Also, this year, art participants must bring their own art supplies and a blank canvas and be ready to paint or draw during their audition time. 
Drama category: Solo only, 5 min monologue. Must provide two copies of the monologue to the judges.

Photography: Any. minimum A4 (11.7 x 8.3 in) to no larger than A3 (16.5 x 11.7 in) and framed. Also, this year, photography participants must bring their camera and be ready to photograph judge selected exhibits during their auditions. 

Participants are responsible for their own props, music, and special equipment in all six categories. 

Process and scoring:
All acts will audition in front of the talent show expert judges. If chosen, they will then proceed to the finals where the participants (including photography and art) will perform in front of a panel of judges as well as a “live audience.” The acts with the highest points will be named the winner! 

Participant (s) in the dancing category may perform as a solo act, duets, and/or a group (no more than 4 participants per group). 5 min. dance routine.

Participants in the singing category MAY NOT utilize live props, back-up singers, dancers or animals. Non-human props such as costumes and other accessories are permitted.  Participants may accompany themselves or have one accompaniment of a live musical instrument.

Participants in the singing category must supply their own background tracks on a single CD. Background music must be clear of lead vocal singers-only musical band instruments are acceptable and light harmonies.

The time limit for each participant in the singing category is 5 minutes. More than one song may be sung within the 5 minutes. No changing of CD’s will be allowed. If more than one song, they must be on the same CD and be somewhat continuous. Songs going over 5 minutes will be shut off. Judges will be instructed to not deduct points due to a song being shut off.

Participants may sing the same song as another participant.

No changes in song choice may be made once the participant has delivered the background CD to the sound person. CD’s must be given to the sound person 5-10 minutes prior to their audition. For the sake of the other participants and keeping the flow of the competition in order, please be available to perform one hour prior to your audition time. If not you could forfeit your turn and possibly be disqualified. Also - when entering and exiting the stage, please be prompt.

Songs containing vulgar or explicit sexual lyrics will not be allowed. Participant s who during their performance use any obscene, offensive, sexual or otherwise inappropriate behavior or gestures, including without limitation those referencing or depicting violence, nudity or explicit activity. Or which are not in the spirit of the competition or do not meet WSTS standards for any reason, as determined by WSTS will be disqualified from the competition.

Participants in all categories and their families are not allowed to have contact with any competition judge before or during the competition. Contact includes verbal conversations and handshakes. Please don’t hang out in back of or around the judge’s area.

Participants, and/or their family or associates who exhibit offensive behavior during any portion of the competition may result in the disqualification of that participant from further competition. Offensive behavior includes poor sportsmanship, bad manners, and lack of decorum.
The order in which each participant competes in the finals shall be determined by a random drawing within their category.

Art(painting & drawing):
This year, one of your entries has to do with the 49ers.  Create a buddy for "Sam" their mascot. Be creative and think about what the 49ers stand for and what they are about. Visit their website for ideas and good luck! 

Music Instrumental:
If chosen as one of the top finalist, you may play a new composition.The same rules & regulations that apply in the auditions will apply in the finals. You must provide three copies of your musical scores for the judges’ reference at the first audition and the final performances. Copies are acceptable and measures must be numbered. Musical scores will be collected at the check-in point.  

If chosen as one of the top finalist, you may submit a new 5-minute monologue. The same rules & regulations that apply in the auditions will apply in the finals.

If chosen as one of the top finalist, you may submit a new song choice on a separate CD for the finals.  The same rules & regulations that apply in the auditions will apply in the finals.

If chosen as one of the top finalist, you may submit a new routine. The same rules & regulations that apply in the auditions will apply in the finals.

If chosen as one of the top finalist, you may submit a new photograph. The same rules & regulations that apply in the auditions will apply in the finals.

The Grand Prize Winner for participants in grades six to twelve will receive $1000.00: 1st place, 2nd place is $500.00 and 3rd place is $150.00. In the event of a tie the Prize will be split between the winners. The Grand Prize Winner for participants in the Senior citizens age group will receive a gift basket (Large size basket: 1st place, 2nd place is medium size basket and 3rd place is a small basket).

The winner will be selected, and then announced, immediately following the finals of the competition and after the scores has been calculated.


The release waiver on the bottom of the registration form must be completed before you can audition. All participants must have a release waiver signed, NO EXCEPTIONS. 

Right to Cancel: Again, performers who do not comply with the rules and regulations will be disqualified.

All decisions and interpretations regarding the competition, its rules, and the selection of the winner remain with the judges, WSTS its agents, and representatives, and are final.

Thank you for registering. Please bring all props or equipment with you on the day of your auditions as well as the day of finals (if applicable). There will be no “dressing rooms” so please arrive prepared and ready to go!
